A super easy, no-yeast South African favourite – perfect for braais, soups, or just with butter!

Ingredients:

  • 500g self-raising flour
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 340ml beer (any lager or your favourite)

Optional extras (for a delicious cheesy twist):

  • 1 cup grated cheese (cheddar works great)
  • ½ cup finely chopped biltong

Method:

  1. Heat the oven to 180°C. Grease a medium-sized bread pan with butter.
  2. In a large bowl, mix the flour and salt together (add the cheese and/or biltong here if using).
  3. Pour in the beer and gently mix or knead until a soft dough forms – it will be sticky, so don’t overwork it!
  4. Place the dough in the prepared pan.
  5. Bake for 45 minutes or until golden and cooked through.

Tip: The bread is done when it sounds hollow if you tap the bottom. Enjoy warm with lots of butter!
