A super easy, no-yeast South African favourite – perfect for braais, soups, or just with butter!
Ingredients:
- 500g self-raising flour
- 1 tsp salt
- 340ml beer (any lager or your favourite)
Optional extras (for a delicious cheesy twist):
- 1 cup grated cheese (cheddar works great)
- ½ cup finely chopped biltong
Method:
- Heat the oven to 180°C. Grease a medium-sized bread pan with butter.
- In a large bowl, mix the flour and salt together (add the cheese and/or biltong here if using).
- Pour in the beer and gently mix or knead until a soft dough forms – it will be sticky, so don’t overwork it!
- Place the dough in the prepared pan.
- Bake for 45 minutes or until golden and cooked through.
Tip: The bread is done when it sounds hollow if you tap the bottom. Enjoy warm with lots of butter!
