Ingredients:
- 1 kg all-purpose flour
- 10 ml salt
- 30 ml sugar
- 10 ml instant dry yeast
- 30 ml cooking oil
- ±750 ml lukewarm water
Optional Fillings:
- Cheese
- Garlic butter
- Bacon & onions
- Chocolate or jam
Instructions:
- Prepare the yeast:
- Add sugar to a small amount of lukewarm water.
- Stir in yeast and let stand for ~10 minutes until foamy.
- Make the dough:
- In a large bowl, sift flour and add salt.
- Add yeast mixture, oil, and some of the remaining water.
- Gradually add more water until a soft, slightly sticky dough forms.
- First rise:
- Cover dough with a damp cloth and let rise ~30 minutes.
- Knead & second rise:
- Knock back the dough and knead until smooth and elastic.
- Cover again and let rise for another 30 minutes, or until doubled in size.
- Shape & fill:
- Roll out dough and cut into rectangles.
- Add chosen filling to one side of each rectangle.
- Fold over and press edges firmly to seal.
- Place on a lightly greased tray and rest for 10 minutes.
- Cook the braaibroodjies:
- Grill over medium-hot coals on a braai grid (do not clamp the grid closed)
- OR cook on an unoiled griddle pan on the stovetop.
- Turn regularly until crisp, cooked through, and nicely browned.
- Serve:
- Enjoy warm straight from the grill or pan.
Optional Tips:
Serve with tomato sauce or chutney for dipping.
Brush the tops with a little melted butter for extra golden colour.
Use a mix of sweet and savoury fillings for variety.
