A deliciously addictive South African braai snack – crispy bacon twisted around sweet glacé cherries with a sticky, caramelized marinade!
Ingredients:
For the Oopsies:
- 500g streaky bacon
- 1 cup glacé or maraschino cherries
- Skewers (wooden or metal)
For the Marinade:
- 1 cup tomato sauce
- 1 cup sweet chilli sauce
- ¼ cup honey
- ¼ cup dark brown sugar
- ½ cup Worcestershire or soy sauce
Method:
- In a large bowl, whisk together the tomato sauce, sweet chilli sauce, honey, brown sugar, cherry glaze (not the cherries), and Worcestershire or soy sauce. Mix well until the sugar has dissolved.
- Assemble the Skewers: Lay two strips of bacon on top of each other. Pierce a skewer through one end and thread a cherry onto the skewer, twist a strip of bacon around it, and repeat, alternating cherries and twisted bacon until the skewer is full. Secure the ends with the skewer and cherry.
- Place the assembled skewers in a shallow dish and pour the marinade over them, ensuring they are well-coated. Cover and refrigerate for at least 1 hour, or preferably overnight.
- Place the skewers on the grill over medium fire and cook for approximately 5-10 minutes, turning occasionally, until the bacon is crispy and cooked through.
- Baste frequently with the leftover marinade during cooking for a caramelized finish.
- Remove from the heat and serve immediately as a delicious snack or appetizer.
Perfect for your next braai – these disappear fast! 🥓🍒
