A deliciously addictive South African braai snack – crispy bacon twisted around sweet glacé cherries with a sticky, caramelized marinade!

Ingredients:

For the Oopsies:

  • 500g streaky bacon
  • 1 cup glacé or maraschino cherries
  • Skewers (wooden or metal)

For the Marinade:

  • 1 cup tomato sauce
  • 1 cup sweet chilli sauce
  • ¼ cup honey
  • ¼ cup dark brown sugar
  • ½ cup Worcestershire or soy sauce

Method:

  1. In a large bowl, whisk together the tomato sauce, sweet chilli sauce, honey, brown sugar, cherry glaze (not the cherries), and Worcestershire or soy sauce. Mix well until the sugar has dissolved.
  2. Assemble the Skewers: Lay two strips of bacon on top of each other. Pierce a skewer through one end and thread a cherry onto the skewer, twist a strip of bacon around it, and repeat, alternating cherries and twisted bacon until the skewer is full. Secure the ends with the skewer and cherry.
  3. Place the assembled skewers in a shallow dish and pour the marinade over them, ensuring they are well-coated. Cover and refrigerate for at least 1 hour, or preferably overnight.
  4. Place the skewers on the grill over medium fire and cook for approximately 5-10 minutes, turning occasionally, until the bacon is crispy and cooked through.
  5. Baste frequently with the leftover marinade during cooking for a caramelized finish.
  6. Remove from the heat and serve immediately as a delicious snack or appetizer.

Perfect for your next braai – these disappear fast! 🥓🍒
