One of the many perks of living on the coast is access to fresh seafood. This creamy mussels dish is rich, flavourful, and pairs perfectly with fresh homemade bread.

If you’re a bit picky about seafood, like I am, this recipe is ideal — the sauce is creamy and delicious without being overly “fishy.” It’s a simple yet impressive dish that has become one of my favourites.

Ingredients

  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • 1 onion, diced
  • Black pepper, to taste
  • Chilli, to taste (optional)
  • Zest of 1 lemon
  • 4 garlic cloves
  • Juice of 1 lemon
  • 250 ml white wine
  • 400–450 g mussels
  • ½ cup parsley, chopped
  • 250 ml cream
  • Salt, to taste

Method

  1. Heat butter in a pan (with a lid) or medium pot over medium-high heat.
  2. Add the onion, black pepper, chilli (if using), lemon zest, and garlic. Fry until aromatic and the onions are translucent.
  3. Add the lemon juice and white wine.
  4. Add the mussels and half of the parsley. Cover with a lid and cook for about 5 minutes, or until the mussels open.
  5. Stir in the cream and season with salt. Cook for another 3–5 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  6. Sprinkle over the remaining parsley and serve hot with fresh bread.

Serving Suggestions

Serve with warm, crusty bread to soak up the creamy sauce, or pair with steamed vegetables or a fresh salad for a complete meal.
