Dairy products add richness, creaminess, and texture to many of our favourite recipes. Whether you’re baking a cake, making a creamy sauce, or preparing a comforting family meal, running out of milk, yoghurt, or cream doesn’t have to bring your cooking to a halt.
Many dairy ingredients can be replaced with simple alternatives that you may already have at home. While the texture or flavour may vary slightly, these substitutions work well in most everyday recipes and can save you an unnecessary trip to the supermarket.
This week’s guide focuses on Dairy Substitutions:
Milk → Coconut milk, almond milk, soy milk, plain full cream yoghurt, or 250 ml water with 1 tablespoon butter
Buttermilk (1 cup) → 1 cup plain full cream yoghurt, ¾ cup sour cream + ¼ cup milk, 1 tablespoon lemon juice + 250 ml milk, or maas
Maas → Plain yoghurt or buttermilk
Greek yoghurt → Plain full cream yoghurt, sour cream, or buttermilk
Sour cream → Plain full cream yoghurt
Heavy cream → Equal parts milk and melted butter
Sweetened condensed milk → Cream and sugar, evaporated milk and sugar, or coconut cream and sugar
Remember that dairy substitutes may slightly change the texture or richness of your recipe, but they are excellent alternatives when you need them most.
Keeping a practical ingredient substitution guide in your kitchen helps reduce food waste, saves money, and gives you the confidence to cook with the ingredients you already have.
